Parents, Children, Libraries, and Reading

A recent report published by the Pew Research Center in May 2013 reveals that libraries play a critical role in parent-child relationships. “The vast majority of parents of minor children — children younger than 18 — feel libraries are very important for their children. The ties between parents and libraries start with the importance parents attach to the role of reading in their children’s lives.”

Here are a few of the highlights of their findings:

  1. 50% of parents with children under 12 years old say they read to their children daily. An additional 26% say they read to their children several times a week.
  2. 84% of parents who value libraries say its because libraries foster their children’s love of reading and books.
  3. 94% of parents say that libraries are important for their children.
